Start CHM 121 CBT PracticeAbout CHM 121: General Chemistry II
General Chemistry II begins with the historical development and importance of organic chemistry and introduces fullerenes as a fourth allotrope of carbon, including their uses as nanotubules, nanostructures and nanochemistry.
The course covers electronic theory, isolation and purification of organic compounds, qualitative and quantitative structure determination, nomenclature, functional groups, introductory reaction mechanisms and kinetics, stereochemistry and the chemistry of major organic compound classes.
It also introduces the comparative chemistry of Group IA, IIA and IVA elements, selected metals and non-metals, and transition metal chemistry.
CHM 121 Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
- State the importance and development of organic chemistry.
- Define fullerenes and their applications.
- Discuss electronic theory.
- Determine the qualitative and quantitative of structures in organic chemistry.
- Describe rules guiding nomenclature and functional group classes of organic chemistry.
- Determine rate of reaction to predict mechanisms of reaction.
- Identify classes of organic functional group with brief description of their chemistry.
- Discuss comparative chemistry of group 1A, IIA and IVA elements.
- Describe basic properties of Transition metals.
